About
This website is my personal backcountry journal that doubles have a guide for those who enjoying spending time in similar places. I crave wilderness. I am in it on a regular basis — hiking, climbing, kayaking (both kinds), biking — anything that gets me to unpeopled places under my own power. More often than not I have one or more of my three kids with me, but many times I go alone. It recharges my batteries to go back to my day job helping entrepreneurs start and run their companies.
I am gradually transferring my large database of trip reports to this website. If you have questions about a particular area in the Northwest, try me even if I haven’t posted on it yet. There is a good chance I have been there, or have friends who have been there. And I will try to respond and post information if I have it. If you have a great location or trip report to share, send it to and I will be glad to let you guest post.
You will notice I cover wildlife on this site. There is no wilderness without wildlife, and we should do all we can to preserve good habitat. Bears are particularly interesting to me. In the late 1990s my wife and I started and published BEARS and Other Top Predators magazine. Back issues are still available here.
